Altavas, Aklan, witnesses the commencement of an exciting venture with the groundbreaking ceremony of the Oyster Production, Processing, and Marketing Facility in Barangay Linayasan on February 2, 2023. This groundbreaking ceremony marks a significant milestone in the efforts of the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP), the Department of Agriculture (DA) Western Visayas, the Provincial Government of Aklan, and the Local Government of Altavas to support the development of the local fishing industry.

The beneficiaries of this groundbreaking initiative are two fisherfolk associations: the Altavas Small Fisherman’s Association (ASFA) and the Tinagong Dagat Fisherfolk Association (TDFA). With the aim of enhancing the value chain of their primary product, the oyster, this project is set to uplift the livelihoods of the fisherfolk community and contribute to the economic growth of Altavas.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of esteemed personalities, including the Honorable Jose Enrique M. Miraflores, Governor of the Province of Aklan, and Honorable Atty. Reynaldo Boy Quimpo, Vice Governor of the Province of Aklan. Also in attendance was the Honorable Denny Dalida Refol, Sr., the Municipal Mayor of Altavas, who has been instrumental in promoting and supporting agricultural initiatives in the municipality.

 Furthermore, Mr. Emmanuel Soviet A. Dela Cruz, a former SP Member and current Agriculture Consultant, shared his expertise and guidance to ensure the success of this project. The event also witnessed the participation of PRDP Consultant Jindra Linda Demeterio, Engr. Roger Esto, the Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator, and the dedicated personnel from DA PRDP and the Provincial Project Management Implementing Unit.

 The presence of Barangay officials, fisherfolk, and residents showcased the strong community support and enthusiasm for this project. Their active involvement and commitment are vital in ensuring the success and sustainability of the Oyster Production, Processing, and Marketing Facility.
